Mason OER Metafinder

The Mason OER Metafinder, from George Mason University Libraries, is a search tool rather than a dataset. Most open educational resource sites let you search their own fixed catalogue; this one fires a single query at 21 separate repositories of open teaching material at once and streams results back as each source responds. Those targets range across the major open educational resource collections plus digital libraries and archives, so one search reaches most of the open education landscape in a single pass.

You work with it entirely through the web interface: type a query and it federates the search live. There is no bulk export and no open API to draw a corpus from, which fixes its place in a RAG project firmly at the front of the pipeline. Its job is to help you find promising material to ingest, not to hand you finished content.

That makes it genuinely useful when you are assembling an educational knowledge base and want to cast a wide net fast, surfacing resources you would miss by searching any one repository. Treat it as reconnaissance: use it to identify the collections and specific items worth pursuing, then visit each source to retrieve the content properly.

The caveats follow from how it works. Because results are gathered live from 21 independent sources, they are transient rather than a stable set you can re-fetch identically, and each hit carries the licence of whichever repository produced it, so you must check terms item by item before reusing anything. The tool does not extract, clean, or normalise the underlying material for you.
