The New Zealand Curriculum (Tahurangi)

Tahurangi is the online curriculum hub of Te Tahuhu o te Matauranga (the New Zealand Ministry of Education). It hosts the country's official national curriculum in two parallel strands: Te Mataiaho, the refreshed English-medium New Zealand Curriculum, and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, the Maori-medium curriculum for kura. The refreshed content is organised into phases spanning Years 0 to 10, with progress markers that describe the proficiency expected at the end of each year of learning. Learning areas are being released progressively: English and Mathematics and Statistics were finalised first (the mathematics statement takes effect on 1 January 2026), with the remaining areas following through 2025 and 2026. Content is published as web pages and downloadable PDFs through the portal rather than as a bulk dataset or API, so ingestion for RAG means crawling or downloading the curriculum documents and supporting resources yourself. For an AI tutor this is a fresh national jurisdiction for alignment and sequencing. The phase structure and per-year progress markers give an explicit scope and sequence you can map lessons and practice against, and the six mathematics knowledge strands (number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics, probability) offer a ready taxonomy for mastery modelling. It sits alongside the standards and frameworks we already list, common-core and ngss for the United States, as a distinct set of expectations rather than teaching content: pair it with content sources such as openstax, khan-academy, ck-12 and siyavula, or maths problem sets like amps, megamath and stackmathqa, to fill the sequence it defines. Licence position matters here. Ministry of Education material is licensed for re-use under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 New Zealand unless a specific item is marked otherwise, so attribution is required, commercial use is not permitted, and some embedded resources, logos, photography and third-party items carry their own separate terms. Anyone building a commercial tutor should treat the curriculum text as non-commercial and check individual items before reuse.
