Data platforms and marketplaces are the meta-layer of the data world: sites that host, aggregate, or trade thousands of datasets rather than publishing one of their own. For a RAG system, where you retrieve passages from a knowledge base to ground a language model’s answers, they are the fastest way to find raw material without hunting across the whole web. One search can surface a dataset, its documentation, and a download link in the same place.
Choosing between them comes down to how they are run. Open registries like the AWS Open Data Registry or Google Dataset Search point you to freely available data, and some co-locate it in cloud storage so you can process it without paying to move terabytes around. Community platforms like Kaggle or Hugging Face let anyone upload, which means huge breadth but uneven quality. Commercial marketplaces like Snowflake or AWS Data Exchange sell curated, often premium data, and expect an account and billing before you can touch it.
The one thing to check every single time is the licence, because on an aggregator it belongs to each dataset, not to the platform. A permissive site can still host something you are not allowed to use commercially. Watch quality too: uploads on open platforms are rarely vetted, so read the data card, check when it was last updated, and confirm who compiled it.
